AMALFI



The origins of the city go back to the roman empire. Late has become the territory of the ducato of Naples, till the 839 when
Amalfi was rebelled to the tyranny of the prince of Benevento, SICARDI, becoming the first republic of sea in Italy. They have become a true military power and trades so that they can command the markets of the Mediterranean for almost 3 centuries. It has issued they commercial sea laws, the famous tables of Amalfi that was the first code navigation, and therefore they was copy from the other mariner republics. Using is own currency (Tari), shortly a true power of the time. The city of Amalfi was also famous for its factories of paper, and this art of the craftsmen has been known in all Europe, a process that continues today although in reduced measure. Tests of this old job still are preserved in the museum of paper in Amalfi. Walking trough its streets and colourful shops, you will catch up the public square where many characteristic stores and many café, render this nice square a place of lively reunions. In the square you also admire the majestic stairway of the cathedral of S. Andrea, a cathedral constructed the ninth century with a façade composed from beautiful mosaics and a beautiful bronze door of Byzantine age. Also for the vicinity of beautiful places like Praiano, Conca dei marini, Amalfi is considered the heart and spirit of the coast.
